What is a Compelling Free Offer?

There are many names for a free website offer–a pink spoon (rememember getting a free taste of Baskin-Robbins ice cream on a little pink spoon, irresistible free offer (IFO) or simply a website free gift.

No matter what you call it, it has one purpose. You are offering valuable information in exchange for your website visitor’s email address. And more specifically, for your ideal client’s email address!

Your compelling free offer can be anything – a report, a checklist, an audio, a video or webinar, or anything else you have that is not only valuable for your audience but it is fundamental to your business and shares your beliefs about your business.

I prefer compelling free offers that are easy and quick for me to consume. I like it when they offer ideas that I can implement right away. Consider your ideal client and determine the format that will work best for them.

If you do want to offer videos and/or audios I like it when they come with a handout that accompanies the recordings. I may not have an hour available right away to watch a video or two. Video is still very useful but by including a handout that is easy to read right away, you are able to meet the person who wants information right now.

Don’t be afraid to share too much. Find a topic around your business where you can share valuable information that will leave your audience wanting more. If you live and breath your business, there is so much information that you COULD share with them but your freebie is just a free taste of what you have to offer.

Let your personality show through. Your freebie offer can be a self-selection tool for your website visitors. Some will love what they learn and will want more and for others, you will not be for them and that is great for you. You are able to build a community of raving fans who want more!!

Social media is great but being able to get right into someone’s email inbox is key to building the know, like and trust element.

List building is a key, foundational piece for any business and especially true for online businesses. You may have heard the saying “The money is in the list”. You are building a list (or network or community) of people who are interested in what you do, who really ‘get’ you, want to learn more and in the future, potentially want to work with you.

Spreading the Word About You

Use your compelling free offer to spread the word about you and your business using social media. Invite visitors to your website where they will happily exchange their name and email for your amazing free offer. At the close of your free offer, have a call-to-action. Invite them to take the next step with you. Determine what the next step you want them to take and invite them to join you. This next step could be an invitation to sign up for a strategy call with you or the purchase of a small introductory program with a special price for subscribers.
